
Curriculum
STA is a registered school with the Oregon Department of Education and is seeking Accreditation from the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS) this school year. All core academic areas are aligned with the standards and benchmarks outlined by the Oregon Dept. of Ed. Students at STA also participate in the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) testing. Curriculum for the Upper Elementary Grades Reading: grade level appropriate fluency; understand and use new vocabulary; use knowledge of words (root words, homonyms) to determine new meaning; predicting; connecting to the text; comparing/contrasting; rereading to find information; genres; author’s point of view; finding information in nonfiction text; comprehension strategies; literature circles; Accelerated Reader; responding to the reading. Writing: The writing process; year long journals; use a scoring guide to evaluate and revise writing; write clearly for an audience; investigate topics of interest; understand and use reference materials; reference published work in writing; write narrative, expository, informational, and persuasive pieces; write in different forms such as poems, essays, and short stories; use correct punctuation, grammar, and spelling; write legibly in cursive and manuscript. Math: addition and subtraction of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; understand the connection between decimals and fractions; understand and use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve story problems and analyze data on graphs; describe and analyze the properties of two and three dimensional shapes; determine the appropriate unit, tool, and strategy to measure a given characteristic of an object. Science: characteristics and classification of living and non-living things; Living and non-living things and composed of related parts that function together; Living and non-living things interact with energy and forces; changes involving forces and energy; Scientific inquiry as a process of investigation; engineering design as a process. Social Studies: community; The regions of the United States; Oregon; European settlements; 13 colonies; colonialism; American revolution; constitution of the US; Civil War; Bill of Rights Technology: Parts of the computer; Using the computer correctly, responsibly, and safely; creating, editing, saving, publishing, and printing word and power point documents; formal typing; searching and locating information on the computer Art: line; space; light and color; value and shading; texture; pattern; motion; balance; focal point; scale proportion; repetition; the vocabulary and art; art critique and analysis
