Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics
St Thomas Academy believes that it is imperative that the students not only meet their academic goals, but they have fun while they learn. Beginning in the 2015/16 school year we will be implementing a new educational strategy known as STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics). Our preschool through 5th grade curriculums will all be built around these common themes.
With the implementation of STREAM we have adopted two new programs to offer hands-on, experiential, and innovative learning tools for our students. Project Lead the Way (www.pltw.org) provides teachers and students early experience in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math helps students learn to feel comfortable seeking solutions to new problems, connect classroom lessons to the world around them, and discover how to employ critical thinking. In addition to PLTW, we have applied to and been appointed as Stewardship school with OSU’s Oregon Natural Resource Education Program (ONREP). ONREP provides tools and resources which encourage students to build a foundation of conceptual learning about the environment through experiential strategies that promote awareness, understanding, knowledge, and action. Students will be engaged in experiential, relevant, and meaningful learning experiences that contribute to their academic achievement both in the classroom and in our community.
Our students continue to have Catholic faith infused in our daily English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, which is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Journeys Catholic Identity. In our ELA curriculum children read scripture and stories that pertain to our daily lives in faith. This ELA curriculum also aligns with state standards and ensures that students will be prepared for the challenges they will be faced with in their academic future in State and National testing.
To further our commitment to technology, beginning this fall, our students will have iPads to use as tool in the classroom. First through Fifth grade classes will have a 1:1 iPad to student ratio and Preschool-Kindergarten will have a 2:1 ratio.
Students have Spanish twice a week and are learning basic communication skills and . We continue to offer music twice a week. Our new music teacher has over 20 years of music education experience. The children now not only sing but are learning music theory and how to play instruments. We also continue provide physical education twice a week and Religion daily - a whole child education considers the mind, body, and spirit!
St. Thomas Academy has always strived to maintain a strong sense of community. We have expanded our extracurricular activities to include OMSI Science Night, Math Night, Family Movie Night, the Multicultural Diversity Dinner, just to name a few. We also have or own Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and even a Pole Pedal Paddle team! It is our intention to have a strong community where you and your child feel welcome and loved everyday.
